How to Dream

from New Traditions by Karter Schachner

about

“The decisive question for man is: Is he related to something infinite or not? That is the telling question of his life. Only if we know that the thing which truly matters is the infinite can we avoid fixing our interests upon futilities, and upon all kinds of goals which are not of real importance. Thus we demand that the world grant us recognition for qualities which we regard as personal possessions: our talent or our beauty. The more a man lays stress on false possessions, and the less sensitivity he has for what is essential, the less satisfying is his life. He feels limited because he has limited aims, and the result is envy and jealousy. If we understand and feel that here in this life we already have a link with the infinite, desires and attitudes change.”
-C.G. Jung

This song is voiced form the perspective of a "fallen angel" from an alternate dream-world (a cross between Nirvana and Heaven, it is both a state of mind and a physical place that lacks Self, Ego, and Suffering). He has been banished from his enlightened dream-state for "lifting his mask" (expressing an Ego) and has been forced to live on earth as a prostitute. At this point he has almost disassociated with his former state as he connects more and more deeply with the suffering of life on earth. This is a prayer/incantation addressed to what he now refers to as his "Creator", derived from Western paradigm terminology, although his former dream-state would not have recognized an individual creator-figure. "Creator" is also a reference to myself (Sol Persona, the creator of the character), in which the fallen angel is symbolic of the parts of myself that have been so immersed in suffering that they have lost touch with Divine reality. In a way this song was written as a dialogue between the part of myself in search of a higher power and the part of myself who believes that I am my own god- I am the creator of my own reality.

lyrics

Creator are you there
I think my time has come
May I return to my home in the clouds

I forget how to sleep
I forget how to dream
This heart is all I know
This skin is all I know
This life is all I know
This heart is all I know
This skin is all I know

You left me on a page
Without a face or name
You left me on a stage
Tell me what's left to learn
Tell me what I deserve

I set myself on fire
I wore the mask you made
Time stood still
And I became the dream
