Workthoughts & Weekends

from New Traditions by Karter Schachner

about

“A man's power to connect his thought with its proper symbol, and so to utter it, depends on the simplicity of his character, that is, upon his love of truth, and his desire to communicate it without loss.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature

"What can be shown, cannot be said."
-Ludwig Wittgenstein

This piece is an exploration of the limitations and futility of language. Words often fall short of expressing the truth behind our societal personae. The truth lies in the moment of experience and the resulting memories derived from it. The people we love and the words we associate with them become intertwined and made ambiguous: boiled in an alphabet soup of feelings and memories, a soup that is meant to be sipped--internalized--not left outside of us to get cold and flat. We are truest to our experiences when they are so deeply personalized that words cannot express their value.

This song is dedicated to my Mother and my best friend, for consistently showing me how to love myself and stay true to my passions.

lyrics

I try
I try and I try and I try and I try and I try
I sing
I sing and I sing and I sing and I sing and I sing
You smile
You smile and you smile and you smile and you smile and you smile

But please forgive me
For not having the words to say
La da da da da da

I think
I think and I think and I think and I think and I think
I feel
I feel and I feel and I feel and I feel and I feel
You cry
You cry and you cry and you cry and you cry

I know so many words
I know so many people
And I know we're all just trying to breathe

I know
I know and I know and I know and I know and I know
I hide
I hide and I hide and I hide and I hide and I hide
You show
You show and you show and you show and you show and you show

You show me forgiveness
When I can't forgive myself
